Monument

MomentAt the moment the question of which war memorials should stay and which should be torn down and replaced is high in the media. This piece suggest that we should erect a monument to those who struggle and suffer the most through any violent conflict.

The image of the war baby came to me while listening to Bush make his statement that they were going into Iraq. I began to cry as I pictured all the innocent people who had no idea of the death and destruction the next days, weeks, months would bring. The parents, who until their last breath would protect their children, those children who would cling to each other while watching the carnage in disbelief, the maiming, the killing, the slow agonies of families such as mine....

Most people do not like looking at this piece, and yet it is not gory nor blemished. It was bought by a man, an ex-soldier who said it summed up the border war for him. I consider it my most evocative work ever.
